The Domestic F406 600 kg-Class Turbofan Engine Completes Its First Flight, Filling the Gap in China’s Light Aviation Power Sector.

On May 23, 2026, the F406 civil turbofan engine in the 600 kg thrust class, independently developed by Sichuan Tianfu Lightweight Power Technology under Aero Engine Corporation of China (AECC), successfully completed its first flight test at a test flight base in Xilin Gol League, Inner Mongolia. The engine operated smoothly and stably throughout the entire flight, with all core performance indicators, including thrust response, fuel consumption, and high-altitude environmental adaptability, meeting the designed standards. This achievement officially fills the domestic gap in the localization of commercial light turbofan engines in China’s 600 kg thrust category.

For a long time, medium and small-thrust turbofan engines used in domestic light business jets, large long-endurance unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and special-purpose general aviation aircraft have heavily relied on imported products. This has resulted in multiple industry challenges, including high procurement costs, long supply cycles, and limited after-sales maintenance services. The newly unveiled F406 engine adopts an advanced single-crystal blade turbine structure and an integrated thin-wall casing design. Compared with imported models of the same class, the engine’s overall weight is reduced by 8%, while fuel efficiency is improved by 12%. It also features strong adaptability to complex environments, including high-altitude regions and extreme temperature conditions.

The engine can be widely applied to various aircraft platforms, including long-endurance reconnaissance and strike integrated UAVs, small and medium-sized business aircraft, and specialized maritime inspection aircraft. Industry experts stated that the successful maiden flight of the F406 turbofan engine completes China’s comprehensive aviation power layout, ranging from high-thrust heavy-duty engines to medium and small-thrust lightweight engines. It will accelerate the independent and controllable development of general aviation power systems and UAV propulsion technologies. The engine is expected to officially enter mass production and delivery in the second half of 2027.

Previously, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles had already obtained relatively complete regulations for registration and road operation. However, hydrogen internal combustion engine commercial vehicles had long lacked compliant access standards, preventing related models from being officially registered and operated, which significantly restricted large-scale technology adoption. The latest China VI-B emission regulation revision has specifically introduced emission control requirements for hydrogen internal combustion engines, clearly defining emission limits, testing methods, and vehicle access requirements for hydrogen-powered internal combustion vehicles. This marks a major breakthrough in removing regulatory barriers for the commercialization of hydrogen internal combustion engine vehicles.
